In the United States, births are the main source of population growth.[6] More people are born than die in a given year, and this creates natural annual growth. This has been the source of national population growth for decades in the United States, but by 2030, international immigration is projected to become the largest source of population growth in the United States.[7] In 2021, Michigan’s fertility rate (live births per 1,000 women of childbearing age) was 32nd in the nation.[8] The state’s crude birth rate (births per 1,000 people), has generally tracked slightly below the national trend, with both falling steadily since 1990.[9] (See Graphic 1.)
