Michigan public school teachers, among the nation's highest paid, comprise the lowest
percentage of total public education employees of any state. (See chart at right.)
Michigan Teachers are Outnumbered by Non-Teachers
Data from the U. S. Department of Education, the Education Intelligence Agency, Forbes
magazine, and the National Center for Education Statistics show that non-teachers make up
54.8 percent of the state's public education employees. Michigan is one of seven states
with more non-teachers than teachers. The national non-teacher average is 47.9 percent.
In Michigan, 40.2 percent of public education system staff are at the district level or
other offices, apart from day-to-day contact with students.
